Melting Pot: Food Review 43 of 52

As part of my New Year's Resolution to try 52 new restaurants, diners, coffee shops and bakeries during 2009, I present the following review.

Place
The Melting Pot

Location
80 South 9th Street
Minneapolis, MN 55402

Who I Went With
Scott, his parents and David

What I Ate:

First Course:
Alp and Dell Cheese Fondue served with apples, carrots, breads and chips.

Second Course:
Alpine Ridge Salad (bed of mixed greens topped with oven roasted tomatoes, award-winning Gruyère, Raclette and Fontina cheeses, hard-boiled eggs and honey roasted almonds, topped with a robust shallot vinaigrette.)

Third Course:
Fondue Feast: Filet Mignon, Sauerbraten NY Strip, Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Bratwurst, Hefeweizen Marinated Shrimp, Roasted Garlic Crusted Chicken, Sun Dried Tomato Ravioli and Fresh Vegetables.

Fourth Course:
Chocolate Fondue with strawberries, cheesecake, marshmallows and brownies.

Would I Go Back
Yes. This was my first fondue experience and it was a lot of fun. A very interactive meal. We were there a couple hours and the time flew by. There was so much food!

Worth the Price
This was the "spendiest" place I've visited on this journey. $45 a person. But, with the amount of food you get, plus the enjoyment of the fondue experience, it's very much worth it!

You're a fondue virgin!

I may have to check this place out now! I've always wanted to go but the price factor was a little intimidating. I'll keep it in mind for my next big special occasion.

Wow! Love "The Melting Pot"! I know this place well. We have reservations for New Years Eve here in Chicago. It will be a 3 hour adventure for a pre-set 5 course feast. Can't wait and then get home just before Dick Clark chimes in the New Year!

We have a Melting Pot here and I freakin love that place! Everything is so good and it sure as hell beats the crappy homemade fondu. Great post!

I've always wanted to go to this place- they have one in Pasadena (I think) by my house. I love fondue- it's fun every now and then to do something different...

Nummy nums! I tried fondue a few years ago and was in such a hurry to eat the steak bits that I burned a layer of skin off the roof of my mouth! OUCH! Still, I managed to dip pineapple chunks in chocolate later...

it's expensive but fun

Michael, sounds like a lot of fun. $45 is a little pricey, but if the food was good, the portions generous, and the atmosphere pleasant, it isn't exorbitant. Glad you finally had a fondue experience!

Not a big fan on the Melting Pot. Or fondue for that matter. Too much work, not enough reward. By the way, you best get cracking or you will not make your goal of 52 new joints.

I freakin' love The Melting Pot! It's such a fun experience, isn't it?! Next time try the Amaretto Fondu for dessert . . . They add Bacardi 151 and light it on fire. It's pretty cool.

Is there a fondue revival ?
Always wondered about the mouth burning thing.
Could definitely handle dipped strawberries though.

I've only been to one place that actually served courses. Usually, you just the food whenever. Sounds wonderful!

I'm wondering what your gonna do when the year is over and you did your 52 reviews.
perhaps you could ask your readers for suggestions for next year ?.
52 Movies, books, CDs, countries worth visiting, types of drink, dangerous sports, relationships (LOL). Let's keep this clean.
I must try this new year resolution thing myself. I just need to find something cheap or i won't stick to it.

Believe it or not, but I have never tried fondue before. Now, I have to make it a point to do so after reading this post.

You're almost to #52 and a few weeks to go. That's a lot of eating, but I can't wait to read all about the final mad dash to the finish line!

My last fondue experience was at a friend's dinner party a couple of years ago. I agree a lot of work for a meal.

Chinese Steamboat is a similar experience.

Mmmm fondue!!! That sounds awesome. Where did you go?

Dean Grey said...

Michael!

It sounds like you had quite an assortment of things to eat!

But......

The whole fondue thing scares me a bit. I don't know, just something about multiple people all dipping their food into one pot that kind of grosses me out.

Maybe I'm just a germ-phobe! I would need my own individual pot! LOL

I do like the fondue...just not the smell of oil that permeates my clothes so we always do the broth version. YUMMMMM.

Glad your first time was fun and didnt cost much (first time for fondue is what I reference, people.)

Sounds and looks delicious. I am glad you had a great experience. Only a few more to go in your quest for 52!

Michael,

What happens when you hit 52 -- restaurants, that is?

What's next?

You can't disappear!

We have one here and I've longed to try it, though I'd heard conflicting things. Now I'm intrigued again!

You are so lucky.

What a coincidence... I was on a business trip this week, and a coworker and I went to the Melting Pot for the first time! I thought it was quite good! Another coincidence- we had the same thing as you! Except we had the amaretto dessert, which was delish. And really, when you think about it, you couldn't get a 4 course meal anywhere else for that price!

I've been to the Melting Pot and had the same reaction. Its rather pricey, but its something different and good for a group of friends.
