Talk Show Flashback: Donahue

There was a time in the 80s and 90s where if a person could hold a microphone, they could host a daytime talk show (or at least try). I loved these shows and I still secretly dream of the day when I’ll have my own (are you listening Hollywood?).

Show
Donahue

Host
Phil Donahue

Years on the Air
29 years! (1967 to 1996)

Trivia
Donahue remains the longest continuous run of any syndicated talk show in U.S. television history.

Did you watch?
I always loved when he had celebrity guests. The world events went over my head. But Susan Lucci on the panel--I was there!

I used to love watching Donohue (just dated myself, huh?). A few memorable shows include pesticides on Apples, the introduction of the Chrysler Minivan, and Cher.

Oh my gosh.....what an era that was in TV...the hair flopping around, the glasses sliding down his nose, the antics, the non-traditional TV roles. I remember watching him on my grandmother's RCA console TV in her living room. 9:00am in the morning, wasn't it??

My parents watched him all the time. I was too young really to get into talk shows. But it's easy to see that he had something that is utterly lacking in most talk shows of today: class.

And Middle America went crazy.

I loved his show too and I even went to two tapings! And it had nothing to do with the fact that we have the same sounding last names - they're spelled differently.

I enjoyed his talk show - especially when he interviewed the entire cast of "Knots Landing". Also, here's a link to a favorite "Donahue" clip featuring a male model fashion show.

Good choice! I used to love the days when was stuck home from school and could watch him. He was smart and liberal and to me he was so cool and big city like.

Okay bad grammar but I did really like him. And he married Marlo Thomas!

***CELEBRITY MOMENT ALERT**

I was waiting for my husband's flight to land at Orlando Airport and Phil and Marlo walked RIGHT past me not one foot from me.

Meanwhile Phil looks FAN-TAS-TIC!! - the bastard.
